Did he fancy himself as a Dark Lord? I was looking through an article at Technabob, called 'Darth Saddam: The Icons of Evil Empires'. I just wanted to share with you the uncanny similarities between some things in Bagdad...

“Do diabolical minds look up to villains in the same way that good men and women idolize heroes?

The Hands of Victory monument, shown below, was commissioned by Saddam to commemorate the victory.

As he passed through the monument on the day of its inauguration in August 1989, Saddam declared, “The worst condition is to pass under a sword which is not one’s own or to be forced down a path which is not willed by him”. The monument, which is located in Central Baghdad, does indeed look similar to a drawing in one of the movie postersof The Empire Strikes Back.

If that doesn't do much for you then there is always the state of Saddam's helmets worn by his army, mandated by his son, Uday...

Yeah. You heard. A typographile. Well I was looking at some images about Las Vegas as I am producing imagery relating to the theme of wastelands when my research pointed me in the direction of this rather amazing museum on the outskirts. All rejected, old and dilapidated neon signage takes advantage of Americas large surface area and uses some of it to dump this massive and strangely beautiful 'boneyard' of signs.

Hmm, I find myself fascinated by this girl. I don't even like her music. I don't think I even like her. Just like I didn't really like the X-Factor, but I still felt compelled to watch it, and in honest truth it was to watch her. And so, from this I have to say I have garnered some respect for the girl. 17, and she has managed to place herself square in front of our prying eyes, and in the process attracted quite a lot of vile shit from people, but she stands as a conundrum to me. She is going to be large and I think i just might listen.

I am just in awe of this mans work - fine detailed pen and ink drawing is a time consuming art - taking days if not weeks to produce a single composition, yet Finlay managed to produce over 2300 designs in a 35 year career, working 7 days a week to produce enough artwork to cover the pulp-fiction rates. Ironically and perhaps warningly his work shot up in price once he passed on.. great. At least he has left a legacy.

What I respect about this artist was his stubborn refusal to sacrifice quality for speed - something that this digital era seems to have introduced into the arts. As dear old Brooks writes to his inmates in the film Shawshank Redemption; 'The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.' Too right old man, too right.

Been reading throughone of my favourite magazines sites --- Wired --- and this caught my eye. The co-founder of piratebay. Now i'm not endorsing his work - but coupled with the aggro over wiki leaks, isn't there a right to freedom of information - be it digital 1s and 0s? Whether you think the modern day digital download and fileshare culture is illegal or not he's been landed a hefty 30 million fine! read on...

Here is a useful insight from Larry Lessig into the psyche of our generation with regards to the use of internet, downloading files, and sharing videos on the move, quickly and without thinking - READ//WRITE, RE//MIX intertextuality in modern society- is it stealing? Is copyright the real thief?

Is it just the norm now for our digital appetites to demand instant gratification?

Is it that keyboard warriors across the globe are uniting against corporate strangle-holds?

Is it vital for our generation to keep sharing content to provide inspiration fresh and innovative? I'm not too sure, what I am sure about is that the music industry is fighting a losing battle it seems, and in some weird round-about way- it seems that as a band/group/DJs only real source of income is through touring and live shows, surely their performance has to be spot on = a better end result? Whatever you think, copyright is indeed an issue needing to be thought about.

I dunno, but since I have moved home all my family seem to do is watch TV. It dominates their, and consequently my life. Having taken a recent trip down to my local Brighton, I had a look into the shops in the north laines. Now being an 'illustrator' there is a supposed 'hatred' engrained into my artistic values. BUT, balls to this. Graphic design holds a soft spot for me, clever thought provoking composition and use of diction is good stuff.

August saw Technicolour Moon commissioned to produce a visual art package for the DJ Duffstep. This saw 3 members in Denni, Krish and myself producing a typical Tech Moon b/w illustration in the garden to themes relating to the album tracks. This was filmed live as we drew it, and this will eventually form a time-lapsed video to accompany tracks on his album. Certain areas of the board will also be cropped and then used to cover the EP releases. (click to listen) The deal also saw us travel to London to perform another live drawing at the album launch party at the Cargo club...I will cover this in the next post.

Here are some images of the board 'suspended in the trees' - the video is in post-production as we speak - exciting stuff, my stuff is hugging the left hand side towards the middle - Denni through to Krish on the right...

I stumbled across this rather luscious blog the other night. A lot of people just shove up images completely out of context just for their own self indulgence - thus removing their purpose - who on earth would do such a thing? ahem...anyway - this site is pure visual pornography, full of images that I just love to spend a while looking at. I found this beautiful work through browsing one of my 'interesting blogs I read' down on the right handside there...'The Strange Attractor' blog showed me to Caroline Roberts site (click). Now I was initially drawn here through the fact I love The Arcade Fire - both their music and their new album covers - for which Miss Roberts is responsible for. Rollover the first image for a spin-out GIF! This project reminds me of some of my influences and experiments of 2009 - namely degrading photographs and using colour overlay - similiar to the work of another of my pals - Michael Willis (click).

Her site documents most of her projects - one particular highlight for me is the gravures portraits (below)

Whilst I am in a generous mood of bigging up other artists, I stumbled across this blog (click) the other night - whilst clicking the 'next blog' option up above. It just seems to mirror a lot of things that I have been up to this year (live art/exhibitions etc...) - but in different styles. I haven't bothered to translate the words but rather let this 'Casita' fellow do his talking through his art - which I love. The use of colour and paint represents the next step in which I want to take my work, it allows such a more expressive style to emit from your hands.

I just love the fact he is taking his work onto the live scene - painting on cars (similiar to what I did in this post), drawing live together - like Secret Wars but with colour, a non-competitive environment and with time on their side it seems...Here I like the idea of modifying a simple exhibition space with painting live on the wall alongside your framed artwork.

I find artists like Gaspar inspirational for the fact that he draws at any opportunity and on any opportune object. The volume of work he produces means that you can only be inspired to grab the nearest object that marks a surface and join in...

After watching and being inspired by my last post...and with minds focussed on the graffiti scene; I thought it appropriate to share the final league standings of the inaugural Secret Wars Euro League Battle. If you didn't know already of what this is/or what I have been doing within this...its too late to do anything about it (you could either hit the banner image to the right; or click on the word secret wars on the contents cloud; also to the right).

Anyway - Bournemouth - a town not renowned for its street art entered a titanic battle with some of the best in the business and came away with our heads held high. Somewhat a conference pub team taking on a premier league club. However, we gave it a stoic effort - and as you can see - we didn't come last. We learnt from our mistakes and finished above Berlin - an artistic heavyweight. CHECK IT!

INFAMY...a documentary to help understand

Now until this year (through Secret Wars & Moon Street) I have never been big into Graffiti or urban art culture...other than to appreciate specially good pieces and the occasional throw up. I too always thought tagging was a senseless vandalism detracting from a greater art form...yet there would be no greater art form on the wall without the tagging - It is all inter-connected and contains its own purpose. Ignorance breeds fear - a fear of the unknown...a bandwagon that people are too often glad to step onto and label graffiti as vandalism or gang-based territory - WRONG!

YET...this movie goes a long way in explaining as to why people get caught up in the thrills of this type of art - one that has a big kick, and a large pull into its scene, once you've popped a can you can't stop - its too true. This is like what Lords of Dogtown is to skating as this is to graffiti...for me.

Anyway, have a watch - its well worth it even for pure entertainment value. Like Toy Story.

Heres a glimpse of the power of what secret wars & some good camera work can achieve...just a showcase from some of our new-found-Portuguese-Secret-Wars friends (we beat these guys in the group stages you know!) at an event in Portugal. But a very nicely produced video non-the-less, good stuff. If only we had the weather eh? Maybe next summer Tech Moon may be doing this live at some festivals - you heard it here first - 'Tech Moon Cafe' - shhhh.

UKADAPTA... i understand now

Having delved a bit deeper into this 'UKADAPTA' phenomenon (and typed its name into google) I have begun to realise its context and function within the digital world and it seems that it is not only a random collection of crazily good artwork- and strangely enough it has quite a few connections with what has inspired me this last year.

They curate an exhibition with which they say;

'Adapta is a satellite project in collaboration with Schoeni Art Gallery in Hong Kong and Adapta UK, based in London. Adapta will bridge the gap between the understanding of this Urban Art movement in the European and Asian art markets, creating a dialogue which, until now, has been relatively unobserved. We believe that the talent-pool that Urban Art offers is extraordinary and hand-picking each artist specifically for each show will demonstrate, educate and provide a wealth of inspiration for the youth of today; especially in broadening their sensitivity towards the society and environment they live in and in nurturing their passion and determination on their interests.'

Of the exhibiting artists are UK based group 'Best Ever' who specialise in photo realistic graffiti art. These guys are immense and probably deserve their own post - but two birds. Check their site (click) which nicley determines for you what is done on walls - and what is done on canvas.

I can only dream but one day I would love them to perform in Bournemouth for Moon Street. The UKADAPTA site also features a magazine - (more in-depth blog) including artist interviews and events....

Still, it is a good read and an interesting development to fuse the UK and Asian markets to understand the urban art scene.

Without wanting to become an 'app store' salesman or Apple product fanatic...I wanted to ensure that you knew about this little beauty from Eboy - harmless fun that reminds me of countless hours spent procrastinating around Wheres Wally books in my childhood.

Eboy collectives work always inspires me - mainly through having attempted pixel art myself I can begin to understand the pain they must go through creating their intense compositions. What I love the most is the blend of obvious and subtle intertextual references in the images, yet this game 'Fix Pix' to which i confess I have indeed purchased for my ipod brings a more hands on experience that brings you closer to understanding the workings of their composition.

Its damn cool - use the motion sensors of the ipod to 'fix' the image - I just liked the way you could explore the compositions and save the finished pic as a wallpaper - it's addictive and such a unique way to extend the attention span to great art - all good.

The relevance is that we beat ze germans in a competitive sport. A SPORT! A sport more culturally relative to my lifestyle - Live Art...than that thing I hopelessly follow week in week out for a glimpse of escapism that only drives me further and further into despair...Football - (namely Arsenal and the useless [especially it seems against the Germans]...Ingerlaaaand). It seems that we are getting the hang of this all rather too late. Winning our last two matches still means we won't progress to the knockout stages - but it does mean we won't finish last in our group...and it does mean we finish above Berlin. Something to warm the post-world-cup-cockles with eh?

Secret Wars Bournemouth vs. Lisbon Home

Another month, another battle...life is hard eh? But in all seriousness this did take place the day after I got back from Beach Break Live...not such good preparation. So we went to war looking to restore pride in our flailing campaign that saw us joint bottom of the table at this point. With pride on the line, and with a point to prove in front of our home crowd -after the general injustice of losing harshly in the last round against Birmingham; Rob, Hannah and myself decided that art direction was going to be crucial - leave egos at the door and concentrate on a team outcome...and it worked wonders. This time a more concise image was dreamt up of Nandos employee's dressed in chicken suits on fire - representing a characature of the oppsing team. Idea done now...now the hard part to put into practice.

The Lisbon lot decided to have a massive dig at the crapness of Bournemouth - which obviously backfires when you are drawing in Bournemouth. Its a lesson we learnt in Birmingham! So the points - theres three to win (1x crowd 2xjudge votes) - went 2-1 in our favour; our first win since the very first battle...good times ahead maybe...Our more graphical style stood out more on the night, and although their piece carried many clever narratives the initial impact of our piece dominated the board - I am one happy bunny and proud of the outcome (below) BRING ON BERLIN!

Beach Break Live

Beach Break came and went really. A very strange festival really; targeted at a student demographic the festival seemed to lack that charm often associated with a certain spirit and focussed more on who could walk around showing off their buff bodies with the most painful shade of red! Although it did have the scariest looking ride (at night, complete with a strobe). That said, the setting was truly beautiful, the weather stunning...and I had the holiday I so craved.

As for the art we got up too, both through intoxication and lack of camera equipment I am still awaiting images of the final stuff...but here is a pic of what I started...and need to finish. We were helping out the Beat Redemption tent -

- It was the first time I had used spray in front of people, and initially it was a bit of a disaster, but on the second day I got in the groove and although its not the usual way of doing things I took a more abstract style, using VERY gradual build ups of colour and tone...given a few more hours this will look pimped and I'm genuinely excited about some future forays with spray in the future. Overall I wasn't proud of what I achieved - but live and learn eh?! Perhaps the festival state of affairs I normally find myself in isn't the best condition in which to perform...

...It resembles a lot of what I have been up to artistically at the moment, sketches and all. Krishna's face seems to have inspired me somewhat and I can't stop drawing figures loosely based on his profile! But this is horribly unfinished - I just wanted to show roughly what I was up to. Here are a couple I did on the day and sourced for this start...

All this live art has got me drawing again, and once I have got a scanner I will be able to share with you what I am up to at the moment (and not rely on a shitty camera phone) - I promise...I am looking to bring out a new portfolio for the second part of 2010 - and with it a new online presence in the form of a proper webiste with pages, and section and proper navigation...

We welcome back the TECHNICOLOUR MOON artists to complete another of their famous live illustration murals: Max Galbraith, Krishna Malla, Marcello Velho & Richard Baker!!! ' - Thats what they said...

This is what I say...This time at Beat Redemption we were moved outside and given protection from the masses in the form of a fence - allowing us to hit some creative flow and create one of our best live pieces to date.

The irony is that we didn't plan any of it till the last minute, deciding on the theme of the single greatest movie...Jurassic Park...simply the best movie ever! And quite possibly the greatest ever laughing (?) scenes ever created...

Here are a couple of videos of what went down in Birmingham...hats off to the guys they showed us a real good time, we went across the road, after a cheeky appearance by Nero in a sweaty pub basement - through a hole in the wall (literally - see below) to a gigantic rave under a massive bridge with an open-valve bass system...frankly the loudest thing I have ever heard...it was extreme.

Hello there. Right, well a 3-0 loss but a hell of a trip oop north to Brum saw a real team effort as we pulled together properly for the first time in the competition - perhaps aided by the fact of a 45 minute standstill on the motorway including an airlift escape. Tragic yet interesting nonetheless. However, we finally arrived in Birmingham at our hostle - which resembled a technicoloured Biker Grove...

The actual event took place in an abandoned industrial estate right in the middle of town. Such an amazing venue for such an event, a place where authority turns a blind eye to street art - and because of that there is some brilliant work going on down there. If only the same could apply in Bournemouth...that said Bournemouth is a picturesque seaside town with idyllic views, and not so many city centre abandoned industrial estates...but there is an art college?! Thats a rant for another time me thinks.

Secret Wars seems to revolve about the idea of having sly digs at the opposite team over 90 of art battling. Similiar to a rap battle (8 mile for instance) we, the artists, are supplied with pens and half of a big white wall; with which we have 90 minutes to create a piece of street art in front of a baying mob! Our idea was centred on the fact that Birmingham has a shopping centre called the Bull Ring - and to turn this attraction on its head we implied that Brum was a bit of a shithole and made a bulls ring-piece the focus of our composition.

It actually turned out quite well, with me and Rob drawing with Denni for the first time but gelling nicely together with our styles. At times it has felt like a bit like a conference team playing premier league opposition in this competition but I felt genuinely this time that we represented Bournemouth with pride here and deserved at least a point - but thats the monopoly of a home battle. Yes you read right people that does say BOXXED after 3 years SW Brum is off to a new home just down the street at Boxxed and to kick it all off we are goin to be puttin on one PHAT ass show for Ya'll .

Its been one crazy start to the comp all round and after a chaotic 3 -0 win against lisbon at home and then Losing 2-1 to berlin in germany its time to smash these southern nancies out the comp on home turf.

When we said we where pulling out all the stops for this one we weren't joking in the slightest joining us for this opening night we have none other than Buddy Peace (strange Famous ) and Jon1st ( drop)Headlining on the decks alongside these two legends will be a selection of SW Brums residents smashing the back end outa it.

Sources have been telling us that some of the Euro cities have been gettin a thousand plus at there events so its time to step up the game Brum town , If your a brummie or a midlander this is your chance to come show england and the rest of the EU that we truly smash the art, Tunes and party harder than any other city out there , ya knows it true !!!

If that weren't enough blend state visuals is gonna be projecting it all live on the big screen plus blowing your face off with a selection of tasty visuals . Adding to that all beer and all spirits and mixers are only £2.50 all night . sooo people its time get involved . the artists are frothing at the seems at the moment and i think your are going to witness some of the sickest panels yet from the lads .

As standard is free before 9 p.m. and 5ivers after see ya at the front!

Expose Yourself

An Arts and Events Management final major project saw the Bournemouth Secret Wars team invited to showcase our talents for an hour or so at Sixty Million Postcards in Bournemouth.

The evening was a resounding success and gave us the needed time to practice together in front of an art-hungry crowd of AUCB students.

Shaun of the Dead >> Fine Art Fundraiser

June saw me return to The Winchester to perform some more live visual entertainment - this time in the name of charity...'The Fine Art Fundraiser' - or as my mate Luke called it the 'Fungal Foot Powder' - don't ask! I was asked to create some zombie art...and that was pretty much that in terms of guidance so I just went crazy and produced some material which was to be auctioned off at the end of the evening...

A touch of fun saw the 'Shaun of the Dead' themed evening aptly take place in the Winchester pub - the place they decide best in the film to have the last stand...

The evening allowed me to hark back to the digital style I was so loving at the end of 2009 before I got caught up in all this live-art malarky! But in all seriousness it was great fun to promote this work live in front of an audience as it is such fun to create - and doing it live with people from the audience allowed me to really engage and entertain.

The idea was to take pictures of people as they walked in and transform (or mutate!) their faces before their very own eyes digitally on my laptop - with my work being projected live onto a large drop down screen on the stage and various TVs around the Winchester Pub. It worked a treat as in between the music it allowed people to have a real laugh with their mates face getting destroyed over a casual pint.

Here is a stop motion video of the other 'headlining artist' from the night Seb Pape doing his thing...a rather beautiful rendition of his illustration blasted up large on a wall in full technicolour paint brushing. Cheekily you can just about see a couple of screens showing my work...more pictures will hopefully come of this event - but without my camera it was hard to properly document the evening. Big shame...will have to rely on Facebook.

It gave me a real appetite to do it again some time in the near future...but the future of Moon Street must lay in helping to promote other local talent too. The May edition of the Moon Street legacy was relaunched with a new venue, new style and new artists. We chose to re-locate the evening to the other end of town, into a more culturally aware district to a pub called The Winchester. This beautiful environment (its a converted Victorian Bank) is truly inspirational in itself (see above), with the venue holding amazing events such as Freeway Poets and now Moon Street its the perfect place to come enjoy some live art. Check this blog post from the Moon Street website for the write up of the night - but be sure to check out the rest of the blog - its the reason I have been neglecting my own exploits for so long, having set up the style, layout and images. Its been a pain in the arse but its definitely worth the effort! Long live Moon Street!

The above images showcase both the poster and the flyer that I created for the relaunch event. What we (Technicolour Moon) are trying to do is allow the promotional material to show off the artist as well as the event, this provides a series for the punter - with a reverse side of the flyer being a collectable mini-poster of the featured artist. This allows each event to take on a unique style and theme - but within the confines of a template - in this case the Moon Street typography.

This relaunch event allowed me the rare opportunity for an artist - of freedom to do what I wished - with the flyer and poster designs, but the format proved a real success.

This variety show technically sandwiched itself between the WAYF event, but deserved its own solitary post seeing the random nature of the event. Essentially a burlesque variety show (click here for the line-up) the event saw art in various forms take place over a very, very entertaining and quite surreal evening.

Seeing our stock rise as visual performers in Bournemouth through both Moon Street and Secret Wars I was invited to draw on a car outside the venue in the run up to the show - this eneded up being one of the most enjoyable and collaborative drawing events so far. I teamed up with artists Luke Trimmings and Nick Marsh to draw whatever we wanted on a poor delapitated Astra. Little did it know its fate...

WAYF Block Party >> The Main Event

The second and third installment of the work for WAYF came in the form of me drawing on various forms of furniture that would help create an artistic corner for the Engine Rooms - part of the club where the event was taking place. The idea was that people could come and interact with this furniture, sit down and then enjoy the third part of the days work - 4 artists drawing live onto the wall sat opposite the 'lounge'.

Apologies for the quality of the documenting photography - I've had to source it off Facebook and my phone. So, here goes...

> The 'lounge' furniture... (more to come there was a sofa and a lampshade too, I promise!) This took shape as an illustrative documentary of the line-up including portrait images of the headline DJs.

WAYF Block Party >> Buffalo Bar - An introduction to spray

In the first installment of 3 separate events in one day for the WAYF Block Party (pictured above) myself and Krishna (Tech Moon) started at Buffalo Bar for the wrist exchange for the evening event. We were literally handed a strip of wall and told to go crazy and that we did - creating mini-buffalo sperm that adorned the wall in a style similiar to the Flintstones. Overall the project was tongue-in-cheek seeing as we only had a couple of hours from start to finish. Below is a pic of the semi-finished piece...

Moon Street April 19 @ Orange Rooms >> Anglepoise sideshow

Much of my last 2 months online has seen me overhauling both Technicolour Moon and our arts-event Moon street - both restyling the blogs and helping to curate the events and April 19th saw the final chapter of Moon Street at The Orange Rooms.

This event saw another brave visual experiment by the Tech Moon boys as we introduced digital art to the realms of live visual performance. Click here for the write up of the event and proceeding images of the night on the Moon Street website...as for me the night presented me the chance to draw on a giant Anglepoise lampshade - supplied direct from the company themselves.

As part of an exciting mini-project for Tech Moon as a collective the iconic lamp manufacturer supplied us with a couple of lampshades to draw on live - and this was one such event. Click here for a link to see quite how massive and immense these things are - I WANT ONE - Suspended from the ceiling me and Max Galbraith drew for a couple of hours a scene of volcanic mayhem and disruption - cheeky but relevant dig drawn at the time of the volcanic ash debacle in Iceland!

So...I’ve been off the web radar for a couple of months. The early part of 2010 has seen many changes with me moving away from home and back down to Bournemouth; and despite being extremely busy with several interesting projects and personal objectives, I have somewhat neglected this blog as a result. So...excuses over and now onto one gigantic update that will probably take me all night - and I have chosen the night of the World Cup final as the ideal moment in time to achieve this overhaul, not a good start!

So...I haven't been sitting around do diddly for the last two months, oh no, I've been living every post-graduates dream of working long hard hours pushing out pizzas for the local hut. Hey, it pays the bills - well actually just...but thats for another time. What I have learnt form the last few months of lonesome living is that you can't do everything all at once (even if it feels like it is all happening like that). A girl once told me that life is what happens while you are busy making other plans - true, but there is no panic - merely a drive to succeed in what you are passionate about and making sure what passes doesn't kill those plans you aim for.

So...preach over and now onto that update that I am still putting off well into the 'update'!

So...now to put all that into context. Since moving back to Bournemouth my illustration has taken a path that is completely with odds with what I thought I would be doing. My work in 2010 has moved away from the digital style that I had been forging through 08/09 and has been concentrated on a more organic and illustrative approach. This is due mainly to my participation in both Moon Street and the Secret Wars Euro League and the subsequent amazing artists that I have been talking to and therefore a move back to using pens and pencils to connect paper-with pen-with what strange things that transcend my mind!

I have overhauled the Tech Moon site and given it a much more professional edge. We are starting to get quite a lot of interest now, that only means exciting times ahead for myself and the t-mooners!

For any aspiring illustrators and artists out there struggling for exposure or ideas - your friends can often hold the key. Setting up a collective is a sure fire way to double your chances of work and exposure, and reflects as a more viable option for potential suitors. It is one of the best things that I have done in time as I can struggle for motivation but to have fellow artists in constant contact is a true inspiration.

Click on the artist link and make sure that you check out Dan Staffords link, he is producing some wonderful imagery and working with very high profile clientele.
